Mogadishu – 14 February 2024.

The European Union has been a key player in supporting the efforts of the Federal Republic of Somalia to assume responsibility of its own security and to become a peaceful, stable and democratic country. In line with this commitment, a high-level delegation from EU paid an official visit to Somalia from 12 to 14 February 2024 with the aim of highlighting the EU’s comprhensive support in the Somali defence sector including: Equipment, under the European Peace Facility (EPF), Training, mentoring and advicing provided by EUTM-Somalia, infrastructure and institutional support.
At the EU compound in Mogadishu, the delegation met with officials from FGS, including H.E. the Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, the delegation participated in the ceremonial ribbon-cutting event and the official handover of military equipment samples to Somali National Army under the European Peace Facility. At the ceremony, Peter Wagner, EU Foreign Policy Instruments Director, spoke with journalists, mentioning “what we are seeing here are just simbolic elements of a long standing support that the European Union and its States are sending to Somalia and to Somali people and we really hope we can continue to be a relevant partner of Somalia in its ongoing fight”. Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama thanked the EU for its substantial support to SOmalia’s defence sector. “The European Union is one of our leading friends who not only help us in the security and defence but also in the develpment, emergency and various sectors in which the government strives to serve its people. And we say thank you.”

In parallel, the EUTM-Somalia Force Commander, General Fulvio Poli, met with the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces at the General Dhagadaban Training Center to showcase EU’s training and support to the Somali National Army.
